TREASURY CHAMBERS,

8th May, 1906.

327

I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Campbell's letter of the 30th December last, with its enclosures on the subject of the desirability of reverting to the arrangement by which a British dollar was coined in India for use in China and the Far East, together with further correspondence on the same subject, copies of which were enclosed with the Foreign Office letter (13237) of the 25th ultimo.

In reply I am to state, for the information of Secretary Sir Edward Grey, that My Lords have caused the cost of manufacture of British Dollars at the Royal Mint to be worked out carefully, and that it appears that the cost would be £2.8.2 per 1000 pieces or £2.8.2 per cent, if the value of the dollar be taken at 2/-. While recognising that the cost is

Under Secretary of State,

Foreign Office.
